Clara Deltort

My practice is rooted in an embodied exploration of grief, love, and the deep interspecies bond between humans and dogs. Through sculpture, installation, and performance, I investigate the emotional and physical terrain of loss, what I call grieving space and the symbolic power of the dog as both companion and mirror. My life has been closely connected with Eiros and Saïdi, Spanish water dogs who are more than muses, they are collaborators. Their presence, gaze, and even absence shape the works I create. These include intimate photographic studies, mutated toys, and sculptural environments made of bamboo, glass, screws, and traces of dog hair and scent. Materials carry memory, and I use them to evoke a kind of primal tactility a physicality that speaks to endurance, strength, and the emotional weight of care. Ultimately, my work is about finding a new language for closeness and grief, one that is sensory, raw, and tender.

The obsession with yellow came to me at an early age. Over the years, I have decided to explore this relationship, creating intense visual expe- riences to share through different types of installations.
I find it fascinating to deep dive into the meanings this color takes in occiden- tal culture, mainly negative overtones and references: The color of Judas, betrayal. This irresistible attraction was not something I understood until reading Michel Pastoureau; from where from this stubbornness to work, to explore this color which to be primary, solar, and favorite of the children, is not less of the infamy, that of the outcasts. It is also the color that dogs distinguish the most, given the different spectrum of sight they possess.
A minimalist performance artwork scene: a reclaimed wooden dog collar placed atop a flat, rectangular slab of raw slate. The collar's worn leather is rich brown with visible creases and a dull brass buckle. The slab rests directly on a flawless, matte-finish light grey plane, unencumbered by any objects or embellishment. A single strip of intense, side-angled white light flows across the setup, creating razor-sharp shadow lines that slice through negative space, while the rest falls into gentle darkness. The composition uses a close-up, cropped perspective for a sense of intimacy and absence. The mood is poignant and meditative, with a stark minimalist photographic style evoking themes of mourning and remembrance, suitable for the artist’s bold, contemplative portfolio.

Practice and process

Clara’s works examine loss, care, and companionship, often in dialogue with Spanish water dogs through tactile sculpture and site-responsive performance.

A sharply defined, minimalist environment showcasing a large, polished stainless-steel disk engraved with delicate, wave-like etchings that subtly evoke fur patterns. The disk is propped upright at a slight angle atop a pale, cube-shaped plinth of smooth stone. Surrounding environment is an uninterrupted matte white cyclorama that falls away softly at the horizon. Intense, cool-toned directional lighting from the right creates mirror-bright highlights along the steel's edge and sharp, dynamic shadows beneath the disk. This creates a powerful and direct visual punch. Shot from a slightly elevated angle with precise, clinical clarity, the image’s photographic realism and minimalist aesthetic amplify the site’s bold, contemporary art personality.
